Are you considering a geothermal heating and cooling system for your home or business? Also known as ground source heat pumps (GSHP), earth-coupled or geoexchange systems, a geothermal system is a greener, more energy-efficient way to control air comfort. At Allen Kelly & Co., we’re proud to be the HVAC experts Raleigh-Durham trusts for turn-key geothermal heat pump installations.
We own all the equipment necessary to install these systems, meaning your installation will be managed by geothermal specialists every step of the way – no subcontractors. If you’d like to learn more about the installation process, call our Raleigh-Durham geothermal heating and cooling pros. We’re happy to explain the process, benefits and tax credits and help you decide whether a ground source heat pump system is right for you.
How does a GSHP work?
You’ve heard of renewable energy from the sun, but did you know the earth can be an excellent source of renewable energy as well? Geothermal heating and cooling systems are often called ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) because they use underground pipe systems to harness heat energy from the earth.
During colder months, this heat is distributed through your home or commercial facility through conventional ductwork, evenly heating the building. In warmer months, the geothermal system extracts warm air from the building and returns it to the earth or uses it to heat water for showers and other hot water needs.
Heat energy is extracted from the earth using ground loops, a system of pipes at least four feet underground. These looped systems can be configured vertically or horizontally, depending on amount of ground space available.
Why choose geothermal heating & cooling?
There are incredible benefits to installing a geothermal heat pump on your Raleigh-Durham property. From money saving to energy saving, quiet functioning to longer equipment life, there are many reasons to choose to install a GSHP. The benefits compared to a conventional air source HVAC system include:
- Better for the environment: Geothermal systems have a 50 to 70% higher heating efficiency and 20 to 40% higher cooling efficiency than traditional HVAC systems, plus they use renewable energy. The EPA and DOE have endorsed geothermal systems as one of the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient options available.
- Cost savings: Less maintenance, free water heating in the summer and greater heating and cooling efficiency mean most owners recoup installation costs in only a few years.
- Tax credits: Green energy incentives offered by local, state and federal governments make GSHPs more affordable than ever. (Learn more: Federal & North Carolina)
- Longevity & reliability: With components indoors and underground, geothermal systems are less exposed to the elements than traditional outdoor HVAC units, making them less likely to be damaged. Expected lifespan is 20 years or more.
- Flexibility: Systems can be installed on almost any size residential or commercial property, under lawns, landscaped areas, driveways or the building itself. Can be used in new construction, or retrofitted as a replacement HVAC system in an existing structure.
- Increased indoor air quality: Because GSHPs don’t pump in outdoor air, the indoor air is free of pollen, pollutants, spores and other allergens.
- Many uses: Can act as a combination heating and cooling system, as well as a water heater. May also be used with a radiant heated floor system.
- Less maintenance: Indoor components use fewer mechanisms, making it simple to maintain and less prone to damage. The outdoor ground loop requires zero maintenance.
- Peace & quiet: Geothermal systems don’t have the noisy outdoor fans typical of other systems. Also, their hidden components mean no unsightly furnace or A/C unit outside!
- Comfort: GSHPs distribute warmed or cooled air more evenly throughout the building, eliminating hot and cold spots typical of conventional systems.
